1871-1916: The sad and lonely story of the ‘Hermit Author of Skaneateles’

In 1871, a new book, “Love on the Wing,” written by Charles March, created a sensation in the town of Skaneateles.
Nearly every resident wanted a copy of it, not because it was very good, or even told an interesting story, but because the townspeople could easily identify themselves and their neighbors as the book’s characters.
“The book was well read in Skaneateles,” the Syracuse Herald would later write in 1899, “for out of the long list of characters in it every one of the village recognized a great many personal friends.”

One Hundred and Four Years Ago: At noon on May 15, 1917, Syracuse’s most prominent citizens, including Lt. Gov. Shoeneck, Mayor Stone, former governor Horace White, Syracuse University Chancellor Day, and business moguls like Franklin, Chapin, Nettleton, and Soule, gathered in the Hiawatha Room at the sumptuous Onondaga Hotel to host a luncheon for Maj. General J. Franklin Bell.
1921: ‘Hands off Thornden!’ Syracuse rallies to preserve its city park from building project

The interior of the amphitheater at Thornden Park in Syracuse. The park is the second largest in the city built around 1921 after a purchase from a wealthy land owner. The park has Swimming pool (50 m), One multi-purpose field,five tennis courts,three basketball courts a playground a fitness trail the E.M. Mills Memorial Rose Garden an outdoor amphitheatre, and a Lily pond.
