Whoever originated the old saying, “Offense wins games, but defense wins championships”, might want to be advised: defense wins games, too.
That was the case on Wednesday evening down at Dorrance Field on the campus of North Carolina, where the No. 2 seed Syracuse Orange defeated the No. 7 seed Virginia Tech Hokies, 9-4, in a veritable slog-fest in the ACC quarterfinals.
Struggling all night to find any consistency on offense, the defense made sure to keep Virginia Tech at bay so that the Orange were never really challenged despite not even reaching double-figures themselves. It takes a special kind of defensive effort to accomplish that.
Finally, freshmen

It was certainly a surprise to see anybody but UNC have the most All-ACC selections, although the Tar Heels did have the most first-teamers with five.
Syracuse’s eight selections are not only the most of any team this year, they’re also the most for the Orange since joining the ACC back in 2014.

On Saturday afternoon in the final Dome game of the regular season, the No. 3 Syracuse Orange women’s lacrosse team continued to find new ways of showing us how good they are in a 16-7 drubbing of the No. 4 Boston College Eagles.
The victory, which improved their record to 12-2 (8-2) to close the regular season, was a complete one on both ends of the field, as the Orange made a statement coming back from their disappointing, last-minute loss against the Eagles on Thursday night.

The No. 3 Syracuse women’s lacrosse team lost its second game of the season – and first to a lower-ranked opponent – to No. 4 Boston College, 14-13, on Thursday at the Carrier Dome. An Eagles’ goal with 65 seconds remaining while on a man advantage sealed the win for Boston College.
Megan Carney, Sam Swart, and Emma Ward each tallied hat tricks to lead the Orange offense. Emily Ehle dished out a team-best two assists while Swart and Ward tied for the team-lead in points with four apiece.
