Is planting trees as good for the Earth as everyone says?
by Mike Gaworecki on 13 May 2021
As the world searches for solutions to global climate change, tree planting has become increasingly popular, with ambitious campaigns aiming to plant billions or trillions of trees.
These projects often have other environmental goals, too, like regulating water cycles, halting soil erosion and restoring wildlife habitat. They also often have socioeconomic goals, like alleviating poverty.
But how effective is planting trees at accomplishing all this, and how strong is the evidence for this effectiveness? To find out, Mongabay engaged a team of researchers who conducted a non-exhaustive review of relevant scientific literature.

SCG adds olefins capacity

SCG Chemicals Business, a petrochemical arm of SET-listed Siam Cement Group, expects its Map Ta Phut Olefins Co (MOC) to reach full olefin production capacity of 2.05 million tonnes a year, up from 1.7 million tonnes, thanks to a debottlenecking project.
The project should lead to lower costs and promote energy savings using environmentally friendly processes.
The project is a collaboration between SCG Chemicals Business and chemical maker Dow Thailand in a move to improve the potential and provide a competitive advantage on a global scale, said Tanawong Areeratchakul, president of SCG Chemicals Business. This project will see MOC produce an additional 350,000 tonnes of olefins a year, increasing flexibility in feedstock selection, he said.
