NEC assures Kailahun voters of violence-free elections : Sierra Leone Concord Times

February 23, 2021 NEC Chairperson, Mohamed K. Konneh The Director of Media and Communications of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Philip F. Kargbo has assured electorates in Kailahun of free, fair and non-violence election. His comment came following the political violence and tension that arose between supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and an Independence candidate that led to the death of one person in Constituency 010 in Kailahun District. The three candidates contesting the bye-elections in Constituency 010 include John Allieu of the main opposition All People’s Congress, Zainab Kama Braima of the SLPP, and an Independent Candidate, Ibrahim Sylvester Jusu Hengela. The Parliamentary bye-election is schedule for February 27, 2021.

February 23, 2021 Members of the NRM and APC Secretary General,Osman Yansaneh The National Reformation Movement (NRM), a surrogate group of the All Peoples Congress (APC) has officially agreed to call off a long standing court action against the APC, albeit one of the three plaintiffs is yet to succumb to the call. At a presser held yesterday at the party’s headquarters on Railway line in Freetown, Dr Ibrahim Bangura, the peace facilitator, told newsmen that Abdul Karim Kafoi and Serajin  Rollings-Kamara have agreed to withdraw the injunction against the APC, but that Comerade  Gomoneh is yet to answer to that clarion call.

Bye-election violence in Kailahun : Scores flee into bush as SLPP burn homes and murder young man – Cocorioko

By COCORIOKO REPORTERS Kailahun was a war zone last week during campaign for the forthcoming Constituency 010 Parliamentary bye-elections , as the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party ( SLPP) candidate , Madam Zainab Kama Brima took armed soldiers and thugs to Banbaru Village, Penguia Chiefdom to attack and burn the homes of perceived supporters of her opponents The All People’s Congress ( APC ) and independent candidates. Video footages showed women, men and children with their belongings on their heads escaping into the forest. According to the women who were weeping and screaming in agony on the footages, the armed soldiers and thugs came and brutalized and terrorized them, burning their houses and forcing them to flee , in the process killing a young man, whose name was given as Foday Morie, who was beaten to death. A pathetic video footage saw a female relative crying over his blood-stained body.

Election results started tripling in immediately after the closure of polls on Saturday November 17 th 2012. The elections for Presidency, Members of Parliament (MP), Chairpersons, Mayors and Councilors were conducted on the same date. The elections attracted election observers from different countries and organizations, including the European Union, Carter Foundation, Ecowas, African Union and others. Under very peaceful and friendly atmosphere voters cast their votes at the various polling stations in the country in over nine thousand. Sierra Leone is divided into four regions, namely East, West, North and South and in each of the region voting reportedly went on peacefully and Sierra Leoneans had the opportunity of participating, which was admired and commended by the observing team.

Sierra Leoneans re-elect President Koroma to serve another second term

The Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission has announced today 23rd November Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma of the ruling All Peoples Congress as the new president of Sierra Leone. President Koroma pulled more than 58% out of the 55% cut-off mark indicated by law for a president to score. Maada Bio of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party scored less than 40% of the total votes counted. There were rumors of over voting in the country but this was made clear by the National Returning officer and also Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone that “there was no over voting in any polling station recounted”.
