NEW YORK Paul J. Hanly, Jr., 70, of Simmons Hanly Conroy, died Saturday, May 20, at his home after a months-long battle with anaplastic thyroid cancer, a rare and aggressive disease.
“There are no words to fully capture what the legal community has lost or the impact he had on our lives, especially my own,” said Jayne Conroy, his law partner of more than 30 years. “It will be Paul’s magnanimous spirit, his championing of his clients and colleagues, and his unflinching kindness and decency that will live on in the hearts and minds of all fortunate enough to have known him.”
His ongoing litigation against companies that produced and distributed the painkillers that have fueled the epidemic of opioid addiction, was one of the most sprawling legal actions in U.S. history.

AbbVie Inc s Allergan Finance LLC unit will face trial alongside a slew of drugmakers, distributors and pharmacies over claims by New York s attorney general and two counties that it fueled an opioid addiction crisis, a New York judge has ruled.
Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Jerry Garguilo on Monday denied Allergan s motion to be severed from the June 22 trial, rejecting its argument that it should not be lumped with other defendants because it accounted for a very small share of the opioid market.
