OKC City Councilman Calls For Changes To Community Policing

By: Karl Torp OKLAHOMA CITY - In the wake of several deadly police shootings, Oklahoma City has started a conversation on how to make its police department better. Oklahoma City hired an outside consulting group to help hear from residents on possible changes. 21CP Solutions out of Chicago held an town hall style meeting recently to hear from Oklahoma City residents. City Councilman James Cooper said we have to rethink community policing. “If someone is black, they are somewhere around three times more likely to find themselves dead when they have an encounter with law enforcement,” Cooper said. The councilman has half dozen ideas he d like implemented.

Today’s verdict on the murder of George Floyd Date:  Dear Members of the Yale Community, George Floyd’s murder was an indictment of our nation’s failure to address anti-Black violence and racism, but today’s verdict was a positive step forward for our country. I am relieved that a jury of Derek Chauvin’s peers found him guilty of George Floyd’s murder, but I am no less heartbroken over the number of Black lives that have been cut short due to police violence. We must continue to focus our energy on addressing racism, injustice, and abuse of power by the police and others in positions of public trust and authority.

Committee Tasked with Advising HUPD Holds Inaugural Meeting | News

Following the recommendation of an external review into Harvard’s police department, a newly formed committee comprised of affiliates spanning the University that will advise the department’s leadership held its inaugural meeting last month. University President Lawrence S. Bacow announced the department review in June 2020 on the heels of student outrage over the presence of HUPD officers monitoring a protest in Boston following the murder of George Floyd, a Black man, by Minneapolis police. The external review produced a more comprehensive probe into HUPD than an internal review set in motion in February 2020 in response to an investigation by The Crimson that found repeated instances of racism and sexism in the department and held the department’s leadership responsible for perpetuating a toxic culture among officers.
