Katelyn Peach and Addison Garver deserve credit for turning leftover lunches into a lifetime learning experience.
Peach, a 16-year-old student at Cibola High School, and Garver, a 13-year-old student at Tony Hillerman Middle School, are using leftover lunches from APS grab-and-go bags to teach their peers how to make healthy meals. It started with a 4-H cake decorating Zoom. Peach mentioned she and her siblings made an apple crisp from the free grab-and-go lunch bags; voilá, the pair is using a Healthy Habits grant from the Walmart Foundation to create videos, recipes and nutritional sheets on using the free ingredients.

“Throughout my life, my family has instilled a sense of civic duty and giving back to our community. Working with my Youth Group at the Safe House and serving food to the homeless showed me the significance of delivering compassion and love to those around me. I found happiness volunteering at Serendipity Day School and was humbled by teaching the little ones how to read and share. Although becoming Student Body President of my school during COVID has been a challenge, working alongside a dedicated officer team, we have spread positivity virtually keeping students involved and motivated.

Yuma, Arizona - Postponed from its usual November date in 2020, the safely redesigned Children’s Festival of the Arts takes place three ways beginning Saturday, April 10.
This year’s event consists of three components: a drive-through event distributing 500 art supply kits 10 a.m. to noon April 10 at Gateway Park; a virtual celebration at 2 p.m. April 10 on the Yuma Art Center’s Facebook page; and a youth and teacher art exhibit on display in the Art Center galleries April 13 through May 28.
“We are honored to keep this longstanding community event thriving through times of uncertainty,” said Arts and Culture Program Manager Lindsay Benacka. “This school year has undoubtedly been challenging for area art teachers and students alike, but artists of all ages have been busy thinking outside the box and processing the past year’s events through creative outlets.”
