Rabbi David Wolpe, the rabbinic Clubhouse breakout star – The Forward

In the pre-pandemic era, rabbis would worry about finding a matching tie or an appropriate outfit before rushing out of the door to the next class they were teaching. These preparations were shelved during the pandemic as Zoom calls took the place of in-person gatherings and interactions, but they came with new logistical headaches: proper lighting, phone tripods and decent backdrops. In recent months, a new audio-only chat app called Clubhouse, currently available only on iPhones, removed those hurdles. The networking app, which allows users to open “rooms” for conversations on topics of interest, has spread like wildfire in the Jewish community in recent months – with discussions on Zionism, religion and food. It sends users a notification when a contact joins the app or a person they follow participates in a room discussion.

But a funny thing has happened during the reign of the eye: once again, the ear has begun to make itself heard. The podcast renaissance is, by now well established, part of a broad trend of audio becoming an increasingly key part of online experience. Nowhere has this trend been more evident than the meteoric rise of the real time voice based app Clubhouse, which has quintupled its users in the last month, even as it remains invite-only, and available solely via Apple’s iOS software. The concept is simple: you join a “room,” or conversation, based on a subject of interest. (Options range from politics to tech culture to karaoke auditions really!) Once there, you can either hang out and listen to the conversation, or choose to speak up. You exit with a simple “leave quietly” button.

Liberal Zionists on Benjamin Netanyahu s Arab outreach – The Forward

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a lot more than his job to lose in Israel’s upcoming March 23 election, its fourth in less than two years. If he falls from his perch as Israel’s longest-serving leader, Netanyahu would have to face the prosecutors at his corruption trial as an average citizen. So he is hoping that Israel’s world-leading speed in vaccinating its citizens against Covid-19 will help give him enough votes to create the stable coalition government that has eluded him in the last three rounds of balloting. And Netanyahu, known by supporters as Bibi the Magician, is courting a new voting bloc Israeli Arab citizens.

From Feigning Intimacy to Falling in Love

From Feigning Intimacy to Falling in Love On their first date at a small Rosh Hashana dinner, Dr. Margaret Soper and Jason Kessler made a split-second decision to act as though they were already a couple. It wasn’t long before they weren’t pretending. Credit.Jennifer Roper Published Jan. 29, 2021Updated Feb. 1, 2021 It was a few days before Rosh Hashana, and Dr. Margaret Swenson Soper suddenly found herself with no plans. She had just learned that the tickets she thought she had to attend services had fallen through, and was feeling sorry for herself. “I had a little pity party for myself,” Dr. Soper, 41, said. “And then the next morning I woke up and I thought: ‘You know what? I’m going to figure something out.’”
