FBR agrees to return Rs1bln to Sindh in tax controversy

KARACHI: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) agreed to return Rs1 billion deducted from the Sindh treasury, making the provincial government pliant to resume collection of withholding tax on motor vehicle registration after three-month break, sources said on Thursday.
The sources said the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department resumed collection of withholding tax on registration of motor vehicles after the FBR agreed to return the amount as the first tranche of Rs5 billion.
The Sindh government stopped the collection of withholding tax at the time of registration of new motor vehicles in July last year after the FBR recovered an amount of Rs5 billion from the provincial bank account maintained at the federal level.
Sindh collects Rs43945.876 million in July to December 2020
Karachi, January 06, 2021 (PPI-OT): Provincial Minister for Excise and Taxation and Narcotics Control and Parliamentary Affairs Mukesh Kumar Chawla has said that Sindh Excise and Taxation Department had collected a total of more than Rs43954 million in various taxes from July 2020 to December 2020.
During the same period of the last financial year, tax of Rs39981.528 million was collected. He said this while presiding over a meeting here in his office. The meeting was also attended by Secretary Excise and Taxation and Narcotics Control Department Abdul Haleem Sheikh, Director Generals Haji Saleem Bhutto, Munir Ahmed Zardari, Additional Director Nasir Affandi, Director Taxes Iqbal Leghari and other officers.

Laeeq Ahmed has replaced Iftikhar Shallwani who was also holding the additional charge of the city’s commissioner.
Ahmed was previously serving as the secretary of the Sindh Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Department.
Naveed Ahmed Shaikh, a grade-21 officer, has been appointed as the new commissioner of the Karachi Division.

Ahmed, who is a grade-20 officer of the Secretariat Group, has replaced Iftikhar Shallwani.
Shallwani, a grade-21 government officer who was also holding the additional charge of the city’s commissioner, has been relieved of both the posts and asked to report to the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department of the Sindh government.

KARACHI: The Sindh government has posted Laeeq Ahmed, a grade 20 officer of the Secretariat Group as the new administrator of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) in place of Iftikhar Shallwani.
Shallwani, a grade 21 government officer who was also holding the additional charge of the cityâs commissioner, has been relieved of both the posts and asked to report to the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department of the Sindh government.
Prior to becoming the KMC administrator, Ahmed was serving as the secretary of the Sindh Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department.
The Sindh government also posted Naveed Ahmed Shaikh as the new commissioner of the Karachi Division. A grade 21 officer, Shaikh was earlier serving as the secretary for the Sindh governmentâs Training, Management and Research Wing.
