TOP health and Covid-19 response officials in the country are already starting to talk about the possibility of the fourth wave. Though new confirmed cases and the national positivity ratio are low as compared with last month, the high transmissibility of the Delta variant, poor SOP enforcement and limited vaccine coverage make Pakistan ripe for yet another peak. Two weeks ago, Sindh Health Minister Azra Pechuho said the situation could get critical if vaccine uptake is not ramped up. This week, NCOC chair Asad Umar urged members of the public to follow SOPs and get vaccinated, as the fourth wave is expected to begin in July. These admissions by senior officials are worrying, and are a reminder that though cases are comparatively low now, they will certainly climb if SOP enforcement and vaccine coverage remain poor.
