Covid didn’t just pummel the Indian economy, it also upended lives. Many lost their jobs, took pay cuts or saw incomes drop. TOI spoke to four families about how they are rethinking their day-to-day spending and long-term financial planning.

“Living through 2020 was like playing a game of snakes and ladders,” says Chembur-based Manish Advani. The year began on a high with a new job with an MNC, plans of moving into a new house and a grand vacation for the family around Christmas. But the lockdown took it all away and threw Manish and his family into uncertainty. As they struggled during tough times, the Advani’s reassessed their spending and, for the first time, made massive cuts.
