Copyright: G Laird A new exhibition celebrating the heritage and importance of the railway industry in West Cumbria is set to open to the public. With funding and support from the Community Rail Network, The Rails Which Circled the World heritage project has transformed Workington railway station into an exhibition centre that celebrates a time when the town was a world leader in rail technology. Iron and steelmaking in and around Workington used to employ thousands of local people, producing industry-leading rails that still circumnavigate the globe to this day.

Allerdale Council looking for contractor to work at Siddick Ponds

ALLERDALE Borough Council is on the hunt for contractors to carry out work at a popular Workington spot. The council is seeking fixed priced tenders for the demolition, clearance, and removal of asbestos at Northside non-statutory allotment site. The allotment can be found close to Workington s local nature reserve, Siddick Ponds - which is also a site of special scientific interest (SSSI). Anyone who is interested in carrying out the work should contact Allerdale Borough Council via its website. Further details will be provided once interested parities register their interest. Siddick Ponds is one of Cumbria s most important bird sites. The combination of extensive reedbed and two large ponds – one freshwater, the other a mix of fresh and saltwater contributes to the variety of species using the site.

A recipe for success at Moorclose food pantry

A RESTAURANT is working with a food pantry to devise a set of recipes which will be distributed in food packs. Nadia Padidar-Bitcon, from Caspian Flame Grill restaurants at Derwent Howe, will devise recipes for people that will help to use all the ingredients in food parcels and reduce the need to buy as many ready made meals. Angela Good, from Moorclose Community Centre, said: Caspian have given us a belter of a food donation too. Nadia is going to put together a series of recipes. The idea is there will be recipes varying from absolutely basic to a bit more complicated, it will stop people needing to buy as many ready made meals.

West Cumbrian wind farm lifespan extensions applications made Requests have been made to extend the life of two Cumbrian wind farms. Allerdale Council are currently considering requests to extend the operational lifespan of Siddick Wind Farm in Siddick, and Oldside Wind Farm in Oldside. Both wind farms are owned by Curlew Power Limited. Siddick Wind Farm is made up of seven turbines, while Oldside Wind Farm is made up of nine. The applications, which have been submitted separately, request approval for the extension of the turbines lifespan by an additional 10 years. If approved, this would result in Siddick Wind Farm having permission to operate until the end of December 2031, and give Oldside Wind Farm permission to operate until the end of September 2031.
