China and US should ‘use UN to build global climate change consensus’

China can offer other countries inspirations and opportunities for cooperation in building a sustainable post-pandemic world, officials from international organizations, scholars and business leaders have said.
At the ongoing four-day Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2021 in China s southern island province of Hainan, experts are of one mind on China s role in pushing for sustainable development, and amassed consensus for cooperation.
The ravaging COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on global health, world economy and social stability, which has further widened the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) gap. In achieving the SDGs, improving rural development is a priority.
Praising China s victory in its fight against poverty, Siddharth Chatterjee, UN resident coordinator in China, cited a World Bank report to warn that the economic contraction caused by COVID-19 has pushed some 100 million people into extreme poverty.
Despite the negative impact of the pandemic, trade volume among countries within the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) remained stable in general and was better than expected. Bucking the trend, China-Europe Railway outperformed other freight expresses and helped the global resource supply and transport alongside the road.
According to a survey on sustainable development based on enterprises, half respondents are neutral about the prospects of global economic recovery, while 60 percent are optimistic about Asia recovery, read the 2021 Annual Report of Sustainable Development on Asia and the World released at the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) on Sunday.
Most entrepreneurs believe that in Asia, in addition to epidemic prevention and control measures, regional trade integration and strengthening cross-border infrastructure connectivity, through initiatives such as BRI and Connecting Euro-Asia, are among top main drivers of recovery, the report stated.
The 2021 Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) kicked off in Boao, a coastal resort in South China s Hainan Province on Sunday. In the post-COVID19 era, attendees anticipation for the conference, also the first international forum comprising mostly offline conferences this year, includes not only helping Asian countries shore up confidence in accelerating economic growth, but also taking it as an international exchange forum that has a global impact.
The four-day annual conference, which is themed around A World in Change: Join Hands to Strengthen Global Governance and Advance Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Cooperation, is scheduled to be held from Sunday to Wednesday this week.
