A ransomware attack on one of the longest petroleum pipelines in the United States shut it down for several days, creating fears of a fuel shortage and a spike in gasoline prices.
The Colonial Pipeline, a 5,000-mile pipeline carrying gasoline and airplane fuel between Texas and New York, was shut down on Friday, May 7. It returned to service five days later. With the Colonial Pipeline typically transporting 45% of the fuel used on the East Coast, it created a panic-buying situation, with stations dealing with long lines, angry customers, and finally, running out of gasoline. GasBuddy reported that over half of the gas stations in South Carolina ran out.
