Rising, Melbourne’s newest major arts festival has been thrown into disarray just one day after its debut, with the Victorian government imposing a seven-day statewide lockdown beginning Thursday night. After a long wait, the much-anticipated winter arts festival finally began on Wednesday, only to be put on hold on Thursday when the city went into a “circuit-breaker” lockdown that shut down indoor and outdoor entertainment and arts facilities and prevented public meetings.
On Thursday morning, the acting premier, James Merlino, declared the lockdown to stop the spread of a “very infectious” Covid-19 strain that was spreading “faster than ever reported”. Rising was scheduled to continue till June 6th. The lockdown was set to last until Friday, June 4th at the time of writing.
