Almost all of them were in remote places where schools are central to keeping small communities connected.

(Flickr photo/Robert Pittman) The cruise industry in Southeast Alaska remains frustrated by Canada’s decision to close its ports to large ships for the year, effectively prohibiting anything close to a typical visitor season in 2021. But in 2022, the cruise rebound in ports like Sitka could be staggering. Representatives from the industry outlined some of the barriers to cruising in the coming season, and warned about a record surge in the next, during a presentation to the Sitka Chamber of Commerce (2-17-21).

While it’s still about a month until schools of herring will begin to spawn in Sitka Sound, the conversation around the role of subsistence advocacy and knowledge in herring management has already started. Last week, the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska hosted a virtual panel with four members of the Herring Protectors, a group that calls for protection of the species and subsistence rights, and advocates for changes to the state’s management of the commercial fishery.
