Church of Ireland primate who, perhaps unfairly, lived in shadow of his hymn-writing wife

Submitting. A Vanity Fair portrait of Bishop Alexander from 1895 At Oxford he was profoundly influenced by the ‘Oxford Movement’ (which sought the return of the Church of England to pre-Reformation beliefs and liturgical practice) and the sermons of John Henry Newman. When in 1845 Newman left the Church of England and his teaching post at Oxford University and was received into the Roman Catholic Church, Alexander seriously considered following him to the extent that he took his name off the college books and wrote to his mother stating his intention of converting and then left Oxford. Doubts began to surface on his journey home. He encountered a Quakeress who managed to calm him. This combined with a torturous night of soul searching in a cheap hotel in Birmingham, resolved his doubts.

Council call to preserve Northern Ireland hymn writer s home

A council is aiming to safeguard the former Co Tyrone residence of the poet behind one of our most-loved hymns. A motion calling for the preservation of Milltown House, where hymn writer Cecil Frances Alexander lived, has received the support of Derry City and Strabane councillors. Mrs Alexander is best known for the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful . The Notice of Motion also called for the other buildings on the old Strabane Grammar School site at Liskey Road, Strabane, to be preserved as well as looking into the possibility of pursuing a Community Asset Transfer. SDLP councillor Jason Barr brought the notice and explained to councillors: This has become very popular among the people of Strabane and the surrounding areas to preserve this site to keep it for tourism and community use.

(St. Martin’s Publishing Group, reissue edition, 2020.) Did You Know?  James Herriot was a pen name chosen by British veterinarian, James Alfred Wight. The pseudonym made sense as the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons frowned on members who advertised. (Jim Herriot was actually the name of a professional soccer player of the era.)

Scrooge and Albert | History Today

Scrooge and Albert Christine Lalumia sees the 1840s as the key moment in the creation of the modern celebration of Christmas. Today it is somewhat of a cliché to say that Christmas as we know it in Britain was either invented or largely created by the Victorians. In fact, historians never seem to tire of debating the role of the Victorians in forming our modern concept of the Christmas celebration. Was it invention or re-invention? Was it an act of myth-making or simply a case of repackaging older traditions in a form that suited their modern age and appealed to the general mood?
