Black History Month: Louisville s Chickasaw Park and Berrytown

Did you know these tidbits about these historic places? Author: Lena Duncan, Nelson Reyes (WHAS 11) Published: 7:35 AM EST February 9, 2021 Updated: 11:48 AM EST February 9, 2021 LOUISVILLE, Ky. Chickasaw In west Louisville lies nearly 100 years of sanctuary for Black residents. Chickasaw Park’s historical significance stretches far past its illustrious, 61-acre landscape. During decades of segregation from 1924 to the mid-1950s, Chickasaw remained the only park to offer adequate amenities to the Black communities since Shawnee Park was designated ‘whites only.’ Racism did not slow down the West Louisville Tennis Club who began using Chickasaw’s clay courts in 1923. The nonprofit club helps older residents stay healthy through sports. They also give at-risk youth something to do to keep them off the streets.

My road trip on Route 66 in the red earth heartland

Since travel has been restricted, I ve missed my frequent visits to the States, and it s made me nostalgic for a road trip I took with my father through Oklahoma a few years ago. It s a place that echoes through my new novel Journey to the Heartland, which I wrote during lockdown. One of the southern states, Oklahoma is bordered by Texas to the south and west, and Kansas to the north, and is part of the Great Plains, which has shaped its history. We checked into the Ambassador, a 1920s boutique Marriott hotel near all the action, and set off to explore. Oklahomans are some of the friendliest people in the United States and it s almost impossible to meet a stranger here. Everyone we spoke with had a little Irish and Native American in their genes and was keen to share some local knowledge with us.

Jones/Athens Banner-Herald via AP University of Georgia students Himani Yadav and Elizabeth Esser took part in a tree-planting project as part of the MLK Day of Service in Athens in 2019. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a day of service a day to let go of work and find a way to contribute to your community. Though service might look a little different this year, below are a few great ways to get involved around the South, be it through planting a tree, donating to a virtual food drive, giving blood, or attending a webinar.
