One day after Chicago was walloped by its biggest snowstorm of the year, Ald. Ray Lopez (15th) wants to strengthen the city’s animal cruelty ordinance to spell out the do’s and don’ts of owning a pet, particularly in winter.

Of the more than 100,000 vaccinations so far, Black Chicagoans account for only 15% while more than half of the city’s residents who got shots are white. Latinos make up 17% and Asians account for 14%, city officials said. Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the trend alarming and promised that she’ll push to get more Black and Brown residents vaccinated. Lightfoot said she’s targeting 15 South and West side communities for an outreach blitz to push for more participation during the next round of shots.

As CBS 2’s Jim Williams reported Wednesday, Afrika Porter of Hyde Park is turning to men to be part of the solution. Within days, three of Porter’s friends were carjacked in three different vehicles. “Three of them had guns put to their heads while they were in their cars, you know, with their children and some by themselves – all within the last 72 hours,” Porter said. With three more Chicago carjacking victims in an epidemic of vehicles taken by force, Porter is determined to do something about it.
