There have been 60 shootings on expressways in Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s (D) Chicago so far this year.
Fox News notes this puts the city on pace to top the 128 shootings witnessed in all of 2020, and it already surpasses the 52 such shootings which took place in 2019.
Illinois State Police are responding to the gun violence surge by spending $12.5 million on cameras with which to monitor the expressways.
NBC 5 reports one person “was seriously hurt” in the latest expressway shooting. That shooting occurred Thursday morning just after 11 a.m. on I-57.

At least 34 people were shot, seven fatally, over Easter weekend in Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s (D) Chicago.
On Sunday, Breitbart News reported 19 people were shot, one fatally, Good Friday into Easter morning alone. By Monday morning ABC 7 /
Chicago Sun-Timesnoted the violence had continued, resulting in at least 34 people shot, seven fatally, for the entire Easter weekend.
The
Chicago Tribuneobserved all seven weekend fatalities occurred on Easter Sunday.
Chicago is on track for record-breaking gun crime this year. For example, CNN explained the number of shooting victims for March 2021 was at a level police have not seen in four years:
Gun ownership among black Americans is up nearly 60 percent following the record gun sales of 2020.
The Guardian reports, “gun ownership among Black Americans is up 58.2 percent.”
The paper cites National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) figures showing “Americans bought a record number of firearms last year,” including an “estimated 5 million people [who] bought their first ever gun between March and August.”
Black Americans witnessed the greatest increase among all first-time gun buyers.
Gun rights groups like the National African American Gun Association have subsequently seen giant leaps in membership.

Nearly 20 people were shot, one fatally, Good Friday into Easter morning in Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s (D) Chicago.
Chicago Sun-Times, 19 people were shot and one of those individuals succumbed to his wounds.
The fatality occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, following an argument that pitted a 31-year-old man against two other persons. One of the two other persons pulled a gun and opened fire, shooting the 31-year-old 14 times.
The shooting victim was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
The
Chicago Tribunereports 703 people were shot in January 1, 2021, through March 31, 2021, in Chicago. That is 184 more people than were shot during the same time-frame in 2020.
