For the third day in a row in the Austin area, a wintry weather forecast is creating icy road conditions Saturday.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) began to pretreat bridges and overpasses on major Austin roads on Wednesday in preparation for the expected icy conditions. Even so, dozens of crashes have been reported throughout the area since Thursday morning.
Because the surface temperatures are so cold, officials are warning about a thin layer of ice that has formed on many roads due to the drizzly weather. This means that all roads, not just overpasses and bridges, are potentially dangerous.
9:25 a.m. update: Austin s cold weather shelters have been activated for Monday night when temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s.
Adults in need of a place to stay should report to the Central Library at 710 West Cesar Chavez St. between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Families should be at the Salvation Army downtown, 501 East Eighth St., by 6 p.m.
COVID-19 health screenings will be done during registration at the shelters and temperatures will be checked.
The city s shelter hot line can be reached by calling 512-305-4233.
8:55 a.m. update: Patches of ice and snow are being reported on roads in Northwest Austin and in Williamson County, the Texas Department of Transportation said.
Naming the Richmond District
by Woody LaBounty George Turner Marsh, Asian Art importer whose estate provided inspiration for naming the Richmond District. -
In early 2009, thanks to the efforts of local historian (and WNP member) John Freeman and District One Supervisor Eric Mar, San Francisco s Richmond District officially reclaimed its name. The Board of Supervisors passed ordinance 36-09 on March 3, 2009 to designate the neighborhood bounded by Arguello Boulevard, Ocean Beach, Lake Street, and Fulton Street, the Richmond District.
1 Unlike controversial renamings of years past examples include the use of Spanish names for east-west streets in the Richmond and Sunset districts in 1909, and Cesar Chavez Street supplanting Army Street in 1995 no protests arose over officially calling the Richmond District the name used by residents, merchants, writers, politicians, and reporters for 125 years.
