Hank Aaron’s death last Friday brought forth a steady stream of highlights, respectful reflections and revelations about his baseball career. But one revelation was missing. We waited in vain to see a declarative sentence with just 10 words: Hank Aaron is major league baseball’s all-time home run leader. Those words, whose truth is irrefutable because of his non-cheating record of 755 home runs, were neither spoken nor seen in print. Talk about ignoring the elephant in the room.

EAST ALTON Fighting Illini basketball great Deon Thomas will be the featured guest at an Illinois RiverWatch virtual fundraiser on Thursday, Feb. 18, hosted by the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center.
During the presentation, titled “Illini Basketball: Past, Present and Future,” Thomas will share his unique perspective about the team during this exciting season.
“Everyone is really excited about what Illini basketball is doing this year,” Thomas said. “I hope to provide some insight into the team and individual players from someone who covers them on Illinois sports radio.”

The school said Phillips died Sunday. He was 75. A three-time All-Southwest Conference selection from 1964-66, Phillips was a key member of a defense that shut out the Razorbacks last five opponents of the 1964 regular season. He had 304 career tackles for teams that went 29-3, including an 11-0 record in 1964. He won the Outland Trophy given to the nation s top interior lineman in 1966. Phillips was drafted No. 10 overall by the Chicago Bears. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992. He is also a member of the Arkansas All-Century Team and the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame.
