When the pandemic hit, Centro Hispano jumped into the action to help families who lost their jobs or had their hours cut.  Most of these folks also have two small children in the house. Some of them got quarantined and they weren t able to work, it just got really intense, Angeli Sosa said. She serves as the Director of Social Impact for the organization.

A detective testified Tuesday about meetings with a homicide victim’s husband that, apparently, the defendants’ attorneys were never aware of in a case that’s been pending for six years. Rontarus Washington Jr., 24, is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated burglary in connection with the November 2014 death of his neighbor, 19-year-old Justina Altamirano Mosso. Washington’s attorneys, Adam Hall and Angela Keck, have suggested Altamirano Mosso’s husband, Felipe Cantu Ruiz, as a possible alternative suspect.

Students in Centro Hispano s after-school program reflect on Fall semester The final assignment of the year was to create a video summarizing everything they did during the unusual semester Author: Emily DeVoe Updated: 5:10 PM EST January 12, 2021 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. While it wasn t the semester they expected, students in the after-school program at Centro Hispano, a nonprofit that serves Hispanic families in East Tennessee, made the most of it.  Typical activities were scaled back and groups were smaller than in the past, often switching to virtual when needed. For the final assignment of the year, students were tasked with making a video detailing the highlights from their semester.

But she recalls renovating the Randall School playground as an example of the concrete — and to her, rewarding — effect local government officials have in the community. “That is what I have always thought about local government is that it’s really tangible, and if you explain it to the average person what decision you re making and why that decision makes a difference in the city or in their lives, they can understand it because it s not five steps removed,” Bidar said. “That s what I have found really rewarding in local government.”
