1:52pm: The Rays on Tuesday announced that they’ve placed center fielder
Kevin Kiermaier on the 10-day injured list due to a left quadriceps strain and claimed catcher
Deivy Grullon off waivers from the Reds. Infielder
Kevin Padlo was recalled to take Kiermaier’s spot on the roster, while righty
Grullon, 24, has made extremely brief appearances in the Majors with both the Phillies (2019) and Red Sox (2020) over the past two seasons. In 13 plate appearances, he’s collected two hits, including a double, with a walk and three punchouts. There’s little to glean from such a small sample, but Grullon carries a .283/.354/.496 slash in 457 Triple-A plate appearances and a .264/.302/.494 line in a similar body of work in Double-A. He also went 2-for-13 with a pair of homers and two walks during Spring Training with Cincinnati, but the Reds designated him for assignment when claiming fellow catcher

Yermin Mercedes won t soon forget his first Major League hit. Or the four others that followed.
The No. 21 White Sox prospect doubled as part of a 5-for-5, four-RBI performance in his club s 12-8 win over the Angels. The five hits established a club record for for a player in his first career start, eclipsing the previous mark of four held by Ping Bodie (1911) and Art Shires (1928).
Playing in his first game since last August, Mercedes wasted little time getting into the hit column. The 28-year-old fell behind, 1-2, before lining an 86-mph fastball into left field for his first Major League knock. He stroked a two-run single to left in his next at-bat and added two more in the seventh and eighth innings. With two runners on and two outs in the ninth, Mercedes doubled to put a capper on his evening.
MIAMI (AP) Joey Wendle hit a three-run homer, highlighting a four-run rally in the ninth inning that sent the Tampa Bay Rays over the Miami Marlins 6-4 Friday night.
Wendle’s one-out shot off closer Anthony Bass (0-1) landed in the upper deck in right field and erased a 4-2 deficit. Manuel Margot then tripled and scored on Francisco Mejia’s sacrifice fly.
“He left a splitter right there for me and I kind of ran right into it,” Wendle said.
Margot also homered and Austin Meadows went deep for the second consecutive game, helping Tampa Bay win its seventh straight in Miami dating to 2019. The Rays edged the Marlins 1-0 on opening day Thursday on Meadows’ homer.
