ALPENA The Bagley Street Bridge was designed to handle traffic and pedestrian trends of the time it was built in 1976.
Beginning Feb.1, the bridge will be closed and reconstructed to meet the needs of today and the future, Alpena County Road Commission Managing Director Ryan Brege said.
The bridge is expected to be closed until late December for the $10.3 million project. Funding for the project includes money from the Michigan Department of Transportation, the federal government, and a Road Commission match.
Brege described the bridge as functionally obsolete, requiring large amounts of work. He said the bridge fit the needs of the community for many years, but, when it was built, the M-32 corridor had little to no development and Bagley Street was rarely used.

The Alpena County Road Commission’s salt trucks, one of which is seen being loaded on Tuesday at the commission, were busy de-icing roads on Tuesday morning, but, so far this winter, they haven’t needed to be used often. That has allowed crews to focus on other work, such as tree cutting and ditch clearing.
ALPENA So far, this winter hasn’t seen many large snow or ice storms requiring extensive road maintenance by the Alpena County Road Commission.
That’s allowed employees to focus on other projects while not behind the steering wheel of their plows.
Car crash causes sinkhole in Shelby Township
A car drove off the paved surface on Schoenherr Road, between 21 Mile and 22 Mile roads, and hit a fire hydrant, which led to this sinkhole opening up and destroying part of Schoenherr Road Dec. 16.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP Both directions of Schoenherr Road were closed Dec. 16 and Dec. 17 between 21 Mile and 22 Mile roads in Shelby Township for emergency road repairs after a vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant and caused a sinkhole.
A portion of the road collapsed into the sinkhole. The road remained closed into the morning Dec. 17 while road crews worked to complete a temporary repair.

Design proposals have been approved for bridges that remain closed in two different local municipalities.
The Livingston County Road Commission board met virtually Tuesday morning and accepted design proposals for the Bowdish Road Bridge in Unadilla Township and the White Road Bridge in Deerfield Township. Both bridges are currently closed.
Requests were sent out to six engineering consulting firms and the board accepted the low-bid from Brechting Bridge & Engineering or BBE in the amount of $58,760. Itâs a small engineering firm from Spring Lake specializing in bridges and the resolution that was approved authorized staff to enter into a contract with the company for design.

With a wintry mix headed to West Michigan, road commissions throughout the region worked around the clock to keep people safe on the roads.
Officials with the Allegan County Road Commission, the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County, Ottawa County, the city of Kalamazoo Public Services, and the city of Portage said Tuesday they were closely monitoring the inclement weather, and were ready for anything Mother Nature delivers.
Managers at most road commissions in the region, including the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County and the Allegan County Road Commission said they were fortunate to avoid most COVID-19 issues, but not all of them.
