Major detour starts Feb 1 for Bagley Street bridge rebuild | News, Sports, Jobs

sschulwitz@thealpenanews.com ALPENA The Bagley Street Bridge was designed to handle traffic and pedestrian trends of the time it was built in 1976. Beginning Feb.1, the bridge will be closed and reconstructed to meet the needs of today and the future, Alpena County Road Commission Managing Director Ryan Brege said. The bridge is expected to be closed until late December for the $10.3 million project. Funding for the project includes money from the Michigan Department of Transportation, the federal government, and a Road Commission match. Brege described the bridge as functionally obsolete, requiring large amounts of work. He said the bridge fit the needs of the community for many years, but, when it was built, the M-32 corridor had little to no development and Bagley Street was rarely used.

That has allowed crews to focus on other work, such as tree cutting and ditch clearing. ALPENA So far, this winter hasn’t seen many large snow or ice storms requiring extensive road maintenance by the Alpena County Road Commission. That’s allowed employees to focus on other projects while not behind the steering wheel of their plows.

Photo provided by Rick Stathakis Advertisement SHELBY TOWNSHIP Both directions of Schoenherr Road were closed Dec. 16 and Dec. 17 between 21 Mile and 22 Mile roads in Shelby Township for emergency road repairs after a vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant and caused a sinkhole. A portion of the road collapsed into the sinkhole. The road remained closed into the morning Dec. 17 while road crews worked to complete a temporary repair.

December 31, 2020 Design proposals have been approved for bridges that remain closed in two different local municipalities. The Livingston County Road Commission board met virtually Tuesday morning and accepted design proposals for the Bowdish Road Bridge in Unadilla Township and the White Road Bridge in Deerfield Township. Both bridges are currently closed. Requests were sent out to six engineering consulting firms and the board accepted the low-bid from Brechting Bridge & Engineering or BBE in the amount of $58,760. It’s a small engineering firm from Spring Lake specializing in bridges and the resolution that was approved authorized staff to enter into a contract with the company for design.
