UNE recognizes achievements of four Maine women with Deborah Morton Awards
The University of New England is pleased to announce the four newest members of the Deborah Morton Society. The award recognizes Maine women distinguished by their careers and public service, or whose leadership in civic, cultural, or social causes has been exceptional.
The 2020-2021 awardees are Linda Cross Godfrey, president of Atlantic Leadership Center; Nancy Grant, advancement officer of Portland Trails; Susan Hammond, executive director of Four Directions Development Corporation; and Janet Mills, governor of Maine.
The award celebrates the memory of UNE’s own distinguished Deborah Morton of Round Pond, Maine, valedictorian of the Class of 1879 of Westbrook Seminary, the forerunner of Westbrook College, which merged with the University of New England in 1996. Tour companies are reporting a resurgence in interest for trips to bucket-list destinations, where travelers can still see the sites without being jostled.

It was the chance to visit a once-in-a-lifetime destination in a once-in-a-lifetime way: practically alone. The European Union (EU) agreed today to open up its borders to vaccinated travelers. A firm date for the change to take effect is not yet set but final formal approval is not in doubt. One catch for travelers is that their vaccinations must be approved for use within the EU. This is not a problem for Americans but vaccines manufactured in China and Russia will no be approved.
The three vaccines available for Americans are all also used in European Union countries – Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson and Johnson’s Janssen. This decision is being made just ahead of the beginning of the summer tourist season. Welcoming Americans into EU countries is nuanced – the U.S. is not yet considered a safe country but fully vaccinated Americans will be admitted.
