Fond memories of playground games

My old school was Ampleforth RC Primary, seen here in the mid-1960s. We all knew the rules of our favourite playground games. I LIVE not far from a school and I can hear the happy sounds of the children in the playground enjoying the respite from lessons. I often wonder what kinds of games they play, and whether they still enjoy those that my generation did as youngsters. There was a whole host of them, the rules not written down, but we all knew what to do, such as Wallflower, Leapfrog, Kiss Catch, Cat’s Cradle, Marbles, Conkers, Hopskotch, British Bulldogs, and Stuck in the Mud. In his column from 21st February 1981, my dad describes games from his own youth, and one that he calls ‘Sheep and Wolf’ sounds very similar to what I would call ‘What Time is it Mr Wolf?’

Oakworth couple whose daughter s death saved the lives of others back organ donation campaign

AN Oakworth couple whose daughter’s death gave life to others are backing a new campaign urging families to talk about organ donation. When 32-year-old Claire McKeown was killed by a drunk driver in 2011, her organs saved several lives and transformed others. “It will be ten years on July 1 since we lost Claire,” say her parents, Martin and Sally Walker. “She saved four lives through organ donation, as we knew her wishes, but it is never too early to have ‘the conversation’ with your loved ones. “This is particularly important for the BAME community – as an imam said to me, ‘if you save one life, you save the world’ – something we can all relate to in these sad times.”
