A door cracks open for return to prep sports in NM

“Today is a great day,” NMAA executive director Sally Marquez said. It has been 10 1/2 months – March 14 – since the last high school sporting event in New Mexico. “It’s been a long road. We know it has not been easy to adjust to the restrictions we have had to put in place,” said New Mexico PED Secretary Ryan Stewart said. In March, few believed that the pandemic would still be raging into 2021. In the interim, athletes and coaches have been agonizing throughout, searching for any sign of a return. That made Tuesday the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.

Cobre schools still face uncertainty in new semester

January 12, 2021 Cobre schools still face uncertainty in new semester Written by Dean Thompson on January 12, 2021 The Cobre Consolidated Schools Board of Education discussed school reentry during its first regular meeting of 2021 Monday night, but noted that the district would continue with distance learning to start the spring semester. “The county remains at a ‘red’ level, and the only county in the state in a ‘yellow’ level is Catron County,” said Joyce Barela, the district’s school improvement officer. “Right now, we’ve Vault tested 22 percent of our staff, and we have a revised reentry plan on social media sites and it has been emailed to students and staff.”

Marquez: This has been a gut-wrenching year | Roswell Daily Record

Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record For many in New Mexico, this has been a rough year for the student-athlete. As the year ends, there is hope that “We will play Again New Mexico.” Sally Marquez, New Mexico Activities Association executive director, talks with J.P. Murrieta about this year in hindsight and the shutdown coming. JP: Last week, we asked if the athletes could work out over the holiday break. We now have some clarity in regard to that issue. What’s changed? Can they work out over the holiday break? SM: They can work out over the holiday break. But staff are going to have some surveillance testing, and that’s coming from the Public Education Department. As of right now, they will be able to work out over the holiday break, but they need to communicate with the district and there will be a two-week shutdown period.
