Movie Review: Cinematic Contributions From One Of The Greatest Of All Kansans

1:57 A week and a half ago, on Kansas Day, someone on Twitter asked who would go on a Mount Rushmore of great Kansans. My first thought was that we were going to need space for a lot more than four faces up there. My very next thought was Gordon Parks. Parks didn’t direct a lot of movies, although a few he did were enormously culturally significant. You know Shaft, of course, and chances are good you’re familiar with The Learning Tree, which was one of the first movies chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry when it was originally established. The Criterion Collection has showcased four of Parks’ movies this month, and watching them has just expanded my appreciation of the man.

Black History Month in Upstate NY: Historical sites, monuments and more

Black History Month in Upstate NY: Historical sites, monuments and more Updated Feb 09, 2021; Black History Month extends through the month of February and in recognition, we take a look at some of the rich history embedded in Upstate New York. Many homes and towns in the state were a part of the Underground Railroad, guiding enslaved Black people to freedom in neighboring communities and Canada. This list includes historical greats like Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass to maybe lesser known, but none less notable folk like the inventor of the potato chip, a peg-legged tap dancer, a Pulitzer prize winning author, two Grammy-winning artists and one Oscar-winning movie inspiration.

The 1853 slave narrative Twelve Years a Slave is now a major motion picture directed by Steve McQueen. The film is a faithful rendering of the life of Solomon Northup, a free African American man who is sold into chattel bondage and brutally enslaved. Northup’s life story highlights one of the little-known facets of American slavery: the dangers that free black people faced during the antebellum era, with little legal recourse if they were cheated, harmed, brutalized or even sold into slavery. Northup was eventually freed. But there were countless others whose names we cannot know.
