Our Boston Bruins take the ice for the first time tonite against the New Jersey Devils. And the B's will have a guardian angel on their shoulder this year. Or should we say on their helmet. That would be a tribute to a great Mainer, Travis Roy, who passed away this past October. Travis, of course, is the heroic person who was paralyzed from the neck down during his first hockey game at Boston University in 1995. The Bruins are joining Boston University hockey teams and putting a TR24 emblem on their helmets. How incredible is that?

He chose the latter brother in law, Keith Van Orden. I think he knew that he was special. I don t think he always knew why. And I say that only because you walk down the street with them and he d be stopped several times. His family says he struggled at times with the fame that followed his accident. But as someone who always strove to be as good as he could be decided he would use his platform to achieve that goal. He wanted to see what a difference he could make on git kept him not only feeling like he was giving back, but it gave him hope that someday there would be a cure. The Travis

Roy, who grew up in Yarmouth, died in October at age 45. He attended Yarmouth High School and North Yarmouth Academy, where he was a standout hockey player, graduated from Tabor Academy in Massachusetts, and played hockey for Boston University. But just 11 seconds into his first college game on Oct. 20, 1995, Roy hit the boards and shattered his fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae, paralyzing him from the neck down at 20 years old.

O Ree Taking His Rightful Place in Garden Rafters
NHL s first Black player will become 12th Bruin to have his number retired by Eric Russo @erusso22 / BostonBruins.com
BostonBruins.com - For decades, Willie O Ree was without one of his most prized hockey possessions. Almost 60 years after he suited up for the Bruins, he had yet to track down one of his game-worn Spoked-B sweaters.
That changed unexpectedly in January 2018.
As the Bruins and NHL celebrated the 60
th anniversary of O Ree becoming the league s first Black player, he was invited to Boston for a number of celebrations that included the dedication of a street hockey rink bearing his name and a pregame ceremony at TD Garden.
