Readers Letters: Is Sturgeon taking tips from Malawi leader? Scotsman Letters © President of Malawi Hastings Banda with Margaret Thatcher in 1979. Many readers of The Scotsman will be aware of the close ties between Scotland and Malawi, a relationship that goes back to the 1860s and David Livingstone. I lived in Malawi for a while in the 1980s during the period when His Excellency the Life President, Ngwazi Dr H Kamuzu Banda (as he was officially referred to) ruled that country with an iron fist. It has recently struck me how many similarities there are between how Banda and his MCP kept control over his country and how Sturgeon and the SNP are currently controlling Scotland and the Scottish people.

Road chaos and avalanches reported as Tayside and Fife hit by biggest snowfall in years Updated: February 10 2021, 8.10am Storm Darcy brought a whiteout to Tayside and Fife as blizzard conditions and heavy snow wreaked havoc on the roads. Blizzards forced the closure of hundreds of schools and resulted in a number of avalanches on high ground on Tuesday. © Mhairi Edwards © Mhairi Edwards A man clears his driveway from snow on Charleston Drive. The endless wintry showers left the likes of Dundee and Perth buried under huge drifts of snow, bringing gridlock and crashes. Heavy snowfall of up to 10in left many roads impassable with motorists attempting to brave the conditions later forced to abandon vehicles.

Readers Letters: Scotland should close borders to beat Covid
Readers Letters: Scotland should close borders to beat Covid Scotsman Letters © Is Scotland missing a trick by allowing travel into the country? Over 100,000 coronavirus deaths have now been recorded. The UK has a death rate of 1471 per million of population. Only Belgium and Slovenia have higher rates and even the US with its much-criticised handling of the epidemic has a lower rate than the UK. Regrettably the UK government’s approach to controlling the virus is not working and alternative or additional measures should be considered. UK governments have instituted measures to control the movement of people in the UK but have done little to control the entry of people into the UK, in fact some 4,000,000 people have entered the country from all corners of the world bringing the virus and its variants with them.

Locals described seeing a “pool of blood” taped off by police after a man was injured in Menzieshill. Those living near Lossie Place and Charleston Drive said a number of police units were at the scene shortly before 11am yesterday.
