Illinois lawmakers want to outlaw fishing with sharp objects along highways
Illinois lawmakers want to outlaw fishing with sharp objects along highways Recent Illinois House votes aim to protect the state and its residents from pitchfork fishing along highways and from releasing too many balloons. The state’s big problems remain ignored.
The Illinois House on April 22 voted to make it illegal to take aquatic life using a pitchfork, underwater spear gun, gig, slingshot or bow-and-arrow device from any public right-of-way or highway.
Sponsored by state Rep. Charles Meier, R-Okawville, the bill amends the Fish and Aquatic Life Code to keep pitchfork-wielding fishermen off public highways and right-of-ways. The implements are still allowed to catch carp, catfish, buffalo, suckers, gar, bowfin, shad and drum fish species – but not along the roads.

In this still image taken from video, Gov. J.B. Pritzker presents a remote version of his annual State of the State and budget addresses from a pavilion at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Wednesday, Feb. 17, in Springfield. Local lawmakers’ appraisal of his address was split along party lines.
SPRINGFIELD Riverbend lawmakers are offering mixed assessments of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s $41.6 billion budget proposal Wednesday that would hold most state agencies at flat funding levels and rely heavily on increased federal funds, as well as proposed changes to the state’s corporate tax structure.

Nine Riverbend mayors have issued a joint statement opposing House Bill 3653, a criminal justice reform bill.
In the opinion of the mayors, if Gov. J.B. Pritzer signs the bill it will have a devasting effect on the ability of police departments to keep communities safe while enforcing the law equally and fairly for all.
Madison County law enforcement officials on Wednesday urged lawmakers not to approve the bill. Just before noon Wednesday the Illinois House voted 60-50 to approve the bill. The passage came about seven hours after the Illinois Senate, at around 4 a.m. Wednesday, approved the bill 32-23.
