A new mayor, deputy mayor and executive has been appointed at a full meeting of Wokingham Borough Council. Councillor Keith Baker, who has served on the council since 2006, was elected Mayor of Wokingham Borough yesterday (Thursday, May 20). Cllr Baker said: “Being the first citizen of the borough is an amazing honour, which very few councillors actually achieve, and I am extremely humbled to become one of this small group. “In many respects I’m quite old fashioned, in that I believe being mayor is something you earn through your contribution to public life, and not simply because it’s your turn.
Congratulating them, Mr Sunderland said: “You’ve all done incredibly well. “Pauline, it was always in the bag. Only a 600 vote majority, nothing to worry about! James, well done in Great Hollands, Paul well done. Yours was the slam dunk of all of them. “And Rebecca, a new candidate, ‘the better half’, far more talented, well done to you, brilliant result. We’ve got to make sure we keep Bracknell Forest and Wokingham Borough Councils. “The Margetts are the ‘it’ couple of Finchampstead, one half controls North, one half controls South, it’s amazing. “I would hope now that Wokingham Conservative Association can comprehensively get a grip of what we need to do. We shouldn’t have so many Lib Dem councillors. We’ve got to work an awful lot harder, get a lot more people on the ground.”
