Charles Hill, art sleuth who tracked down works by Titian, Vermeer, Goya, and Edvard Munch’s The Scream – obituary He recovered The Scream during an elaborate ‘sting’ operation in which he posed as a representative from the Getty Museum in California Charley Hill: a natural for covert work in the art world Credit: Richard Anset Charles Hill, the art detective, aided the recovery of many priceless objects in an adventurous career both with the Metropolitan Police and as a freelance investigator, most sensationally Edvard Munch’s The Scream and Titian’s Rest on the Flight to Egypt. A former soldier and aspirant priest, Hill gave up sword and cassock in favour of dagger and cloak. With a passion for art and a flair for theatrics, he was a plain-clothes man who could talk to academics and the criminal fraternity on equal terms.

The art detective whose life was like a Hollywood heist film

It sounds like the plot of a Hollywood heist film. Two thieves break into a major art gallery and steal a painting worth £40million in less than a minute. Showing off, they leave behind a note at the scene that reads: Thanks for the poor security. Local authorities, Norwegian in this case, seek help from their British counterparts and the investigation is assigned to an unassuming Cambridge-born history graduate who goes undercover as a US art dealer to recover the stolen painting.  Only this isn t the plot of a summer blockbuster, but the real-life story of the 1994 theft of Edvard Munch s The Scream, which was taken from Oslo s National Museum.

The 120-year history of Lloyd Park in Walthamstow, East London | East London and West Essex Guardian Series

Since opening to the public in 1900 Walthamstow’s Lloyd Park has been enjoyed by generations of local residents. Once the private grounds of what is now the William Morris Gallery, it was donated by the Lloyd family to the Walthamstow Urban District Council in 1898 for public use. In 1912 the park was extended when the council purchased 16 acres of the adjoining Aveling Park Estate. Then as now the park was the perfect place for leisurely strolls around the formal gardens and beyond, and facilities including tennis courts and a bowling green enabled more active pursuits. Professional lawn tennis tournaments, cricket and football matches were well-attended regular fixtures, including the Sunday Newspapers Cricket League, and for a brief period in the early years the park was home to Walthamstow Avenue Football Club.
