One person is detained for unreported reasons after the sweep begins on Thursday morning.
Three days after eviction notices were issued, city crews began to clear a longstanding homeless camp at Laurelhurst Park in Southeast Portland on Thursday, July 29.
Employees with multiple agencies and bureaus within the city arrived at the park around 8 a.m. There, they were greeted by dozens of homeless advocates attempting to stop the sweep. Park rangers arrived in order to help move the crowd while crews continued clearing the area. Police officers were on the scene to assist if the need arose.
Oregon governor weighs vaccine mandate for state workers
By SARA CLINEJuly 28, 2021 GMT
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Oregon Gov. Kate Brown is “examining” whether to require that state workers get vaccinated, as the highly transmissible delta variant continues to spread across the state and COVID-19 cases spike.
Elsewhere, in California and New York, officials announced state employees will be required to be vaccinated or undergo weekly tests for COVID-19. In addition, the Department of Veterans Affairs on Monday became the first federal agency to require vaccinations, for its health workers.
“We are examining the actions taken this week by California, New York City and the VA, and determining what further actions can be taken in Oregon,” Brown’s deputy communications director Charles Boyle wrote in an email on Wednesday.

A possible fifth wave of the COVID-19 is swelling in a pandemic-exhausted Oregon that less than a month ago seemed to be on the verge of recovery.
âThe highly contagious delta variant has increased tenfold in the past two weeks in Oregon, and it is now estimated to be associated with 80% of the new cases in Oregon, said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the state s top epidemiologist, said Tuesday evening.
The Oregon Health Authority reported 804 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday and five deaths. It had reported 1,032 on Tuesday, along with five deaths. Statistics released on Tuesday at times are inflated by lagging reports from the weekend.
