New Dorp daughter pens upbeat book about mom’s ‘Wild Ride Through Dementia’

Kathleen Bulfin, one of six children, was excited to relocate from her native Brooklyn to Bay Terrace in 1981.
She would attend St. Charles School and then St. John’s University for her bachelor’s degree, and the College of Staten Island for her graduate degree. Now a teacher at Markham Intermediate School, Kathleen lives in New Dorp.
“Growing up Irish, meant managing your expectations,” she said. “You learned if you expected the worst, then you were never disappointed. When my mother got the diagnosis of dementia, I was devastated, but I knew she could probably live a long time and crying (as my mother taught me) wasn’t going to change anything.”

Public Health Sudbury & Districts has declared COVID-19 outbreaks at Lasalle Secondary School and Cyril Varney Public School of the Rainbow District School Board in Greater Sudbury.
This follows the dismissal of all students and staff at both schools on Thursday.
The ongoing investigation has identified four additional cases at Lasalle Secondary School for a total of six and two more at Cyril Varney Public School for a total of three

BELLOWS FALLS â The Windham Northeast Supervisory Unionâs office is leaving its longtime location at the former St. Charles School in favor of a renovated office in Westminster Station.
The building, on Route 5, is the former home of two accountants and tax preparers: Annette Spaulding, who owned the building and later rented the space to Catherine Harris. The current owner is Green Mountain Station Realty LLC, with the principals listed as Margaret and Robert Palmer. The new lease is for $48,000 a year.
Superintendent Christopher Pratt said the office would start moving immediately, with the move starting the week of Feb. 15. He told members of the Bellows Falls Union High School Board Monday night that the new owners of the building had done extensive renovations, including putting down all new carpeting and painting the interior of the main building, as well as an adjoining small building.
