Council approves $50M Montgomery improvement plan The city of Montgomery gave the green light this week to a bond issue that s expected to bring in $50 million for a wave of new building and improvement projects across the city. The move refinances several decade-old bond issues to borrow the money at a lower interest rate, while also bringing in $50 million that can be used for capital improvement projects. Council members worked with Finance Director Betty Beville and Mayor Steven Reed s office on the details of the plan and how to best use the money. The measure passed unanimously. Most bond issues run $30 million. This is $145 million, so everybody had concerns, Council President Charles Jinright said. Some of them had concerns about how much money was going to go into their district. . At the same time we got this bond issue going, there s a $42 million relief package coming from Washington.

Montgomery City Councilman Richard Bollinger in intensive care

Montgomery City Councilman Richard Bollinger was in intensive care at a Montgomery hospital Tuesday amid a monthslong battle with cancer. Bollinger was diagnosed with cancer in December and continued to attend meetings while undergoing treatment, Council President Charles Jinright said. He briefly stopped attending meetings in February and returned later in the month despite dealing with a tremendous amount of pain, Jinright said. Things have gotten worse in the past two weeks, Jinright said. The council president asked for prayers Tuesday and confirmed that Bollinger is in the ICU at a local hospital. He s had a setback in his cancer treatments, Jinright said.
