Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith, who was fatally shot during an hours-long standoff Friday evening in Grundy Center, was a 27-year veteran of the patrol and was described as a well-known community volunteer.
Smith joined the State Patrol after graduating from the Department of Public Safety Academy, according to a biography posted on the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy s Facebook page. He was first assigned to work in Fairfield, then in 1996 was moved to Oelwein. Trooper Jim Smith is proud and humbled by his position as an Iowa State Trooper, the 2018 posting said. He consistently performs his duties everyday with the motoring public safety his number one priority, along with having the I can make a difference mindset. A 27-year veteran of the Iowa State Patrol was shot to death Friday night during an armed stand-off with a man who authorities say had assaulted a policeman earlier that evening.
Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith was part of a tactical team that entered the Grundy Center home of Michael Lang at about 9 p.m. Friday. Mitch Mortvedt, Assistant Director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, delivered a briefing on the case this afternoon.
“After Sergeant Smith was shot, members of the entry team observed Lang emerge from the doorway, holding a black, pump action shotgun,” he said. “Two members of the entry team that were with Sergeant Smith retreated into the basement, while other members of the entry team pulled Sergeant Smith from the residence. Lang then barricaded himself inside the residence and refused to come out.”
