WATCH: Skipton group says outdoor life key in addressing mental health problems

OVER the last year the toll of the coronavirus pandemic has stretched far beyond the physical impact of the disease, with lockdowns, shielding and isolation affecting many people’s mental health. Some have found their confidence battered to the point where they are reluctant to resume routine activities like shopping or meeting with friends. In Skipton a new organisation has emerged to help, with assistance aimed at gently re-acclimatising people to familiar activities while enjoying life outdoors. The Ground Yourself in Green project has grown from the Skipton Step into Action group, which was appointed as a community support organisation by North Yorkshire County Council at the start of the pandemic.

Pueblo County Commissioners approve responsible contracting policy

Pueblo’s Board of County Commissioners approved a new contracting policy that would require bidding firms to meet pre-established minimum standards related to health insurance offerings, retirement benefits and a prevailing wage.   The responsible contracting policy will apply to large-scale capital improvement projects that cost at least $2.5 million. It comes after years of negotiating the exact terms. County commissioners were adamant about passing the new policy before requests for proposals go out for the upcoming jail and Joe Martinez Boulevard extension project.  I’m sure this board wants to ensure this policy and our values as a board are reflected in the biggest piece of capital construction in the county’s history,” Commissioner Chair Garrison Ortiz said during Tuesday s board meeting when the board first considered the policy. They officially passed it on Thursday.

Hickenlooper pushes for Amtrak expansion, infrastructure bill during Pueblo visit

The momentum for a passenger rail service through Pueblo continued as Sen. John Hickenlooper met with local leaders at the Pueblo Union Depot Thursday morning to discuss the upcoming federal infrastructure legislation that could inject the necessary funding for the project.   This is a point in history where we’re going to make investments in our country’s infrastructure, probably the largest investment since Franklin Roosevelt, since World War II and transportation is going to be a big part of it,” Hickenlooper said, standing in front of the historic railroad cars stationed along the Arkansas River behind the depot.   We ve got this kind of once-in-a-generation investment in transportation moving ahead of us and I wanted to come look at places where we re going to make those investments.

Colorado may use preliminary data for redistricting amid census delays

The Colorado House of Representatives approved a resolution on Wednesday that asks the state Supreme Court to consider the constitutionality of using preliminary population data to draw initial electoral maps in light of census data delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.   “While no one could have predicted that a public health crisis would throw a wrench into our carefully crafted process, we have to do everything we can to ensure the process runs as smoothly as possible,” House Majority Leader Daneya Esgar, D-Pueblo, said in a statement. “That’s why we’re engaged in a bipartisan effort with the Colorado Supreme Court to guarantee fair and balanced maps are delivered on time and with full public participation and input.”
