NHS Digital has announced that Simon Bolton has been appointed as its interim CEO.
He joins the organisation from Test and Trace where he has been CIO since August 2020, and replaces Sarah Wilkinson, who is due to leave the role in June.
Prior to Test and Trace, Bolton was the CIO of Jaguar Land Rover. NHS Digital said he has extensive experience in IT delivery, operations and leadership.
Chair of the NHS Digital Board, Laura Wade-Gery, said: “Simon will provide strong leadership for the organisation to maintain this momentum and build on what has been achieved over the last year, supporting and driving forward the wider NHS agenda of simultaneous restoration and transformation of services with digital at its heart.
NHS BOSS SIR SIMON STEVENS TO STEP DOWN
Sir Simon Stevens is to step down as the head of NHS England and become a peer, the UK government has announced. After seven years in the role, Sir Stevens will leave on 31 July having overseen the COVID-19 vaccination rollout to all adults.
Sir Stevens has previously been vocal about the greater need for the NHS to invest in technology and diagnostics and has encouraged the use of AI and machine learning within the NHS. In December 2020, Sir Simon confirmed 11 more parts of the country will be formally designated integrated care systems (ICS), servicing a combined population of 14.5 million people.

NHS Digital has appointed Simon Bolton as interim CEO while it hunts for a permanent replacement following CEO Sarah Wilkinson’s imminent departure.
Bolton, who is currently CIO at NHS Test and Trace, will take on the interim role on 4 June 2021, when Wilkinson is due to depart after four years at the helm of NHS Digital.
