CARY, N.C. - For the fifth time in program history, the Washington Huskies are playing in the Sweet Sixteen, this time taking on #2 North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament third round. A win would send the Huskies to the Elite Eight for just the third time ever and first time since 2010. The matchup with North Carolina will take place Wednesday, May 5, at 12:00 pm PT.
CAN T SCORE ON SEKANY
Olivia Sekany lowered her GAA to 0.59, the lowest full-season GAA in program history. The lowest GAA for a completed season in Washington history is 0.68, held by Hope Solo in 2001. Sekany is now on a 579-minute shutout streak, the longest of her career and longest by a Husky since 1991. Only two other Husky keepers ever have had shutout streaks of 500+ minutes: Sarah Shimer in 2017 and Tamara Browder in 1991.
A small-business owner who has been outspoken against COVID-19 restrictions during the past year has entered the Pueblo City Council race.
Heather Graham, 32, announced her candidacy for an at-large seat during an event at Renewed Wholesale Tuesday night. Graham, who owns Ruby’s and the two Graham’s Grills locations, said she is running to champion the small business community following a year of tough restrictions.
“I witnessed a lack of support for these small businesses and a lack of communication between the city and these small businesses,” she said, speaking to a crowd of more than 100 attendees.
When the first wave of closures to nonessential businesses hit last March, Graham said she was left in a near-impossible situation about how to manage her 70 employees. She and her husband, Danny Beaudry, who owns Pueblo Athletic Club, were suddenly without income or a clear timeline of when they could reopen.
The Pueblo City-County Library District announced Tuesday the launch of its $2.5 million capital campaign to help raise money to renovate the Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library.
The district made the announcement in the courtyard at the library where Jon Walker, executive director of the library district, addressed attendees of the event.
Visuals of what the future renovations will look like were present for people to view. For over 20 years of heavy use, things like furniture, fixtures and carpeting tend to wear out, Walker said. All of that will be refreshed.
The total cost of the renovations is around $11.5 million. This funding will be used to mainly renovate the interior of the building along with adding an exterior site that includes an outdoor amphitheater and expanding the parking lot.
Sarah Martinez, a Pueblo native who works in youth substance abuse prevention, began her campaign for Pueblo City Council s District 3 seat on April 23, the latest of a group of young candidates hoping to reshape city government in the fall.
“I never thought I would be running for city council,” the 28-year-old said at her kickoff event at a home in Pueblo’s Aberdeen neighborhood. It was through my community work, learning how systems interact at a city level, connecting with several agencies where I found that I had a voice and that I could change systems.”
The event was attended by her campaign team, friends and several community members who endorsed Martinez, including Pueblo School District 60 board member Tommy Farrell.

After being hidden for a decade, a priceless mural has been rediscovered in the heart of the city.
On Thursday, April 8, officials at the Mexican Cultural Institute (MCI) proudly unveiled Telón de la paz, a mural by Manuel Felguérez, a Mexican artist who died from COVID-19 last year. The abstract artist’s striking creation took up an entire wall, much to the amazement of representatives from the MCI, Consulate General of Mexico in San Antonio, the City’s Department of Arts & Culture, and the San Antonio-Mexico Friendship Council as well as interested art fans.
