Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins announced a halt to mercy flights for Kiwis stuck in Sydney, during a press conference on Friday. “For people who have been stuck in New South Wales for some time now, this will be a difficult decision for them. It further delays their ability to return home.” Hipkins said the Government would provide more detail about how New Zealand citizens and residents could return home in a few days times. He said it would take officials days to arrange 1000 rooms in the managed isolation facilities, and flights would possibly be available to people from Tuesday at the earliest.

A bridal party, including a bagpiper, accidentally became the stars of a last-minute press conference at Parliament.
When viewers tuned in to watch a Covid-19 press conference, they instead saw a bagpiper and bride about to walk down the aisle. Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins’ snap announcement about green trans-Tasman bubble flights was supposed to kick off at 3pm on Friday, but was delayed for none other than a wedding. Ilam MP Sarah Pallett was marrying longtime partner Andy at Parliament in Wellington. When viewers tuned in to the live video of the press conference, they would have seen a bagpiper, and Pallett getting ready to walk down the aisle alongside two bridesmaids, who are believed to be her daughters.

Kiwis who tuned in to watch Chris Hipkins COVID-19 update were off to a confusing start when instead of the Minister for the COVID-19 response, a man with bagpipes was stood in Parliament.
But all became clear, when Labour MP Sarah Pallett, flanked by two bridesmaids, appeared on screen, readying herself to walk down the aisle.
A scheduling conflict meant Hipkins was scheduled to speak to reporters at the same time as Pallett was getting married.
Hipkins approached the standup, and upon seeing his colleague preparing herself for one of the most important days of her life, promptly turned and walked away down the corridor.
