NATCHEZ, Miss. – Mayor Dan Gibson broke a 3-3 city board tie Tuesday to move forward on selling the old Natchez General Hospital to owners of an adjacent mansion. The vote came amid allegations this is to keep blacks out of a neighborhood of whites opposed to the vacant facility becoming apartments.
The Natchez Board of Aldermen deadlocked on beginning the process for selling the city-owned blighted property to Ginger and James Hyland, who own The Towers antebellum estate behind the old hospital.
In breaking the tie, Gibson voted to get appraisals on how much the Hylands should pay to purchase the old hospital from the city.

NATCHEZ, Miss – The Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday to increase the fine for littering as Natchez officials express alarm about so much trash being strewn around town.
“It’s a problem,” said Mayor Dan Gibson, who got the board to approve a $500 fine on litterbugs caught by police. “We need to have an amount that will get people’s attention.”
While the fine is being raised, it can only be imposed if police officers witness someone littering, said Natchez Police Chief Joseph Daughtry. The mayor said those caught could get off with just a warning.
Gibson said 20 new signs will be posted throughout the city notifying the public that littering is illegal and that those caught doing it can be fined $500. The old fine was $150.

NATCHEZ, Miss. – The city Board of Aldermen is considering a request to remove the Natchez Confederate monument at Memorial Park placed there in 1890.
This comes a week after Mayor Dan Gibson unveiled plans to erect another monument at the Main Street park to honor black Union soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
Gibson is not calling for taking down the statue that memorializes Confederate soldiers from Natchez-Adams County killed during the war, but Alderman Billie Joe Frazier said it should be. The men it honors “were traitorous to the Union,” Frazier said.
He wanted Tuesday to get the board to vote for removing the 131-year-old monument from the city park. Aldermen instead voted to further review a request by Frazier and Natchez resident Lee Ford.
