Sir Colville Young Demits Office As Belize’s Governor General
May 1, 2021
In Belize’s history, Belize has had two Governor Generals, Dr. Dame Minita Gordon who was later followed by Sir Colville Young. The latter, His Excellency (HE) Sir Colville Young, served in this capacity from November 17, 1993 until 30 April 2021 when he officially left office. This followed a personal request from new Prime Minister Johnny Briceño that Sir Colville step down from the office he has held for almost thirty years. A short ceremony was held today in honor of his years of service at the House of Culture in Belize City – also known as the Government House. After the fanfare and arrival of a number of guests, those in attendance were shown a video highlighting some of the accomplishments of Sir Colville Young, including but not limited to his contributions to Belize’s music and arts and the Scouts Association of Belize.

‘A great day’: With his old camera in the foreground, Hwang points to a photograph of Prince Philip in his album of prized snapshots taken during the Duke’s historic visit to Malaysia. ZHAFARAN NASIB/The Star
GEORGE TOWN: It was so long ago, but retired teacher Hwang Hong Shi, 86, clearly remembers being there when Prince Philip came to Penang.
It was Oct 31,1956, and Malaya was still under British rule.
Hwang remembers crowds waiting at the jetty and children lining the streets along Peel Avenue to cheer for Prince Philip’s motorcade.
Hwang, who was then an English teacher at Westland School, holds dear the photos he took of the Prince’s visit to the Governor’s house, then known as The Residency, and Penang Free School.
Quid pro quo: Air Scouts cleaning an old airplane at the Royal Malaysian Air Force Museum in Sungai Besi in 2015 in return for the training they received.
When Teh Nur Shafiqah Ab Samad enrolled in an aircraft engineering technology course at a local university, the 22-year-old soon found herself volunteering to teach kindergarten children about the main parts of aircraft and marshalling signals.
Her reason for wanting to be part of the junior aviators programme, run by the Air Scout unit at her university, was fairly straightforward she wanted to inspire more young people to pursue careers in the field of aviation.
