Zambia : PART IV: Who's Who in 2021 Presidential Elections

Hakainde Hichilema – leader of the United Party for National Development (UPND) Before I got down to pen this article, I took a knee in protest against tribalism in Zambian politics. This was after reading comments made by PF member Davies Chama back in 2015: “If at all they (UPND) will ever be in power, maybe a 100 years from now, not in my generation, maybe a 1000 years from now. They [Tongas] are polygamous by nature, so maybe as they have more children, they can be history and in power.” The above abusive and prejudicial language is no different from that of racism, neither is the one uttered by Bizwell Mutale: “Zambia is not ready for a Tonga president in 2021 and beyond. It will never happen;” nor the one by Chishimba Kambwili: “Tongas cannot vote for Jesus if he stood in that part of Zambia on the basis of his tribe.” Kambwili was later linked to a statement in social media that alleged he would eliminate Tongas given the opportunity.

Connection and resilience: Kuziel explores the ecology of the African savannah

Liz Fuller-Wright, Office of Communications May 3, 2021 1 p.m. For his senior thesis, Luca Kuziel is investigating the biomes and microbiomes of animals in six African regions, including Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, where he spent two pre-COVID-19 field seasons, and the Mpala Research Center in Kenya (seen here). Photo by Yuki Haba When Luca Kuziel discovered the community of ecologists at Princeton, he had no idea that his experience of radical acceptance with them would change the course of his research and his life. Over the past four years, he has deepened his love of the natural world and gone through his own metamorphosis, coming out as transgender during his second summer at Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique. But when he tried to go back for a third summer, to gather data for his senior thesis, he was stymied by COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Female anti-poaching crews | CN Traveller

Monday 26 April 2021 Of all the inequalities in African conservation, perhaps the most stark is its lack of African women. Racist and sexist biases mean that they are often overlooked for leadership positions, and must defy gender roles to take certain jobs. There is also the challenge of balancing childcare with research field trips. But the presence of women is essential. They play a major part in community engagement, without which conservation fails. In wildlife security, however, they are busting stereotypes. Black Mambas Felicia and Joy at Balule Nature Reserve, South Africa Julia Gunther South Africa’s Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit was the world’s first all-female team when it formed in 2013. In 2017, the Akashinga rangers in Zimbabwe founded the original armed all-women anti-poaching unit, inspiring the female group at Segera, followed by Team Lioness, in 2019, both in Kenya. Elsewhere, women in positions of authority are proving powerful role models in their commun

The beef's too tough for me! Lion is left bloodied after hour-long battle with buffalo

This lion bit off more than it could chew.  In an hour-long battle in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia, the 420lb lion clung onto a 1,900lb buffalo, sinking its claws into the animal s hide. But the prey proved more than a match for the predator, which ended up being impaled by the buffalo s horn.  Pictures taken by Matt Armstrong-Ford, 31, from the Isle of Bute, Scotland show the bloodied lion exhausted on the ground in defeat as several of the buffalo gathered around him. Days later the weakened big cat was found dead having been attacked by hyenas.   Male buffalos are considered to be one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. Their horns fuse together creating a tough shield which is known as a boss .  Some refer to them as black death or widowmakers as they reportedly trample or kill around 200 people a year.
