The gunman also was killed in a shootout with police. According to the Champaign Police Department, officer Chris Oberheim, 44, was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance in the 2400 block of North Neil Street shortly before 3:30 a.m. As officers were getting out of their vehicles at the scene, they exchanged gunfire with an armed suspect. Oberheim and another officer were shot, and so was the suspect.

The second officer was wounded and reported in stable condition. Champaign police said in a statement that two officers who were called to the scene of a domestic disturbance on the city s north side encountered an armed person after exiting their police cars and an exchange of gunfire followed.

Decatur Native and Former DPD Officer Shot and Killed in Champaign Wednesday Morning A former Decatur Police Officer, now working for Champaign Police, was shot and killed early Wednesday morning while responding to a call involving a domestic dispute. 44-year-old Chris Oberheim was one of two Champaign Police Officers who were shot early Wednesday morning in the 2400 block of North Neil Street around 3:24 a.m. when they arrived at the Town Center Apartments in response to a domestic disturbance.
