For years, Joe Marler managed to keep two different versions of himself, he thought, completely separate. There was the Marler who played for the Harlequins, who was known for being a loose cannon. Then there was Marler the husband, man and father who he felt managed to avoid his fury during matches. “Very rarely would I have issues in my personal life, because I always thought that they were separate. But they’re not.”
As he recounts in his new documentary,
Big Boys Don’t Cry, the now 30-year-old professional rugby union player was not coping as well as he thought. He was crying in the car on the way to training, but not acknowledging what this meant. Then, in March 2019, “this caricature that I’d invented crossed over. I ended up smashing the house up, losing the plot and then running out on my seven-months-pregnant wife.”
