This year’s 46th annual Delta Marsh/Portage Plains Christmas Bird Count (CBC) took place on Monday, December 28. Five field parties consisting of seven individuals along with 14 feeder watchers identified 28 species of birds totaling 2,737 individuals. Due to Covid-19, the event was low key with feeder watchers playing a key role and with no social gathering afterward to compile information.

The weather was pleasant enough with sunny conditions prevailing and a high of -14 C but the morning breeze did have a bite to it. Due to minimal snow cover on the ground, the field parties were able to cover their respective zones within the 24 km diameter count circle with relative ease, including driving down often impassable roads for this time of year.
Europe’s Grey Partridge Population Plummets
94% of the European grey partridge population has been lost since 1980, according to a remarkable new bird atlas.
The European Breeding Bird Atlas – EBBA2, one of the most ambitious biodiversity mapping projects ever undertaken, documents changes in breeding distribution of all European bird species. The atlas, published in December, confirms that this key species has suffered one of the steepest declines of all farmland bird species.
