Questions about who deserves access to West Seattle Bridge becomes flashpoint

The emotion over increasing access to the lower Spokane Street Bridge was evident Wednesday during a meeting of the West Seattle Bridge Community Task Force.
Even as members celebrated an important milestone in the plan to get traffic moving again, the most heated discussion occurred when Seattle Department of Transportation officials were pressed about increasing individual access to the lower swing bridge over the Duwamish River.
The upper bridge was closed almost one year ago on March 23 after structural engineers said the bridge could collapse when concrete cracks began to expand at a faster than anticipated pace.

Holy cow, the data shows there were ~2000 entitled jerks per day ignoring the law on that bridge? Is it possible to go back to camera footage from before enforcement began to identify who they are, and banish them from west Seattle permanently? I’m certain they wouldn’t be missed.

that’s a pretty bold statement. you should worry about your own driving not the driving of others. Every time someone who is unauthorized crosses the bridge the city brings in $75 (not all of that goes directly to the city), and that goes to things such as road repairs and cameras. if you’re so worried and distraught by people making their own decisions maybe you should be banished to west Seattle.

With the West Seattle bridge closed, I hope SDOT keeps the major roads nice and snow free.

Remember, anyone who must or will be driving tomorrow remember kids will be playing in the snow, any and everywhere at any time. Any intersection could have children zipping out of nowhere, stop sign or not. And just how its hard for cars to stop in the snow, pedestrians have a hard time moving or stopping on snow and ice too. Drive slowly and carefully. Everyone will stay happy that way.

In Seattle, the busy Lander Street corridor serving more than 13,000 vehicles, 1,400 pedestrians and 100 bicyclists daily was frequently blocked by train traffic, causing long lines of waiting cars and trucks. Completing the South Lander Street grade separation project remedied long-standing traffic congestion problems in the essential east-west corridor in Seattle’s Sodo District.
The new bridge is better designed to handle traffic from the Port of Seattle, King County Metro, regional freight, daily commuters and visitors. It has also reduced vehicle emissions and improved freight flow, supporting economic rejuvenation for Washington state.
