DENVER (AP) The Colorado Rockies selected the contract of veteran first baseman Matt Adams from the team s alternate training site.
The 32-year-old Adams was signed by Colorado in late March. He s a career .259 hitter with 118 homers and 397 RBIs in stints with St. Louis, Washington and Atlanta. Adams was originally selected by the Cardinals in the 23rd round of the 2009 amateur draft.
Adams hit 20 homers during the regular season for the Nationals in 2019 when they won the World Series.
So, what’s the plan?
Words fail to capture my relief that Jeff Bridich is no longer calling the shots for the Rockies. Hopefully, the era of paying sub-par free agents who are past their prime big bucks is over. Hopefully, the era of treating superstars like garbage (see Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado) or not recognizing them (DJ LaMahieu) is over. And one can only hope the condescending attitude that the front office knows best and should not be questioned is over.
The only problem is that with the Rockies front office, it’s hard to differentiate anyone’s decisions from Dick Monfort’s. How much of this is Bridich’s fault and how much is Monfort’s? Did Bridich bamboozle Monfort into bad decisions? Were they a Lloyd-and-Harry duo with a competitive debate on who is dumb and who is dumber? Or does it all come down to the micromanaging owner?
PHOENIX (AP) Caleb Smith doesn’t mind admitting he was angry at being pulled from Arizona’s starting rotation after one ineffective start at the beginning of the season. In fact, he still is.
But instead of moping, he got better. Now he’s among the reasons the Diamondbacks are suddenly playing good baseball.
Smith was one of five Arizona relievers who threw a scoreless inning on Thursday night, which allowed Arizona time to rally for a 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. After a 5-10 start to the season, the D-backs are now 13-12.
“Anything they want me to do, I’ll do,” Smith said. “And I’ll do it with a smile well maybe not a smile on my face but to the best of my ability. And I won’t complain about it.”
